Varese Schools Champion Environmental Sustainability, Recognized by UNESCO

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

On World Environment Day, schools in the Varese province of Italy showcased their commitment to environmental sustainability, a model recognized by UNESCO. This initiative, part of the Green School program, involved 19,000 students and 2,000 teachers.

A total of 106 schools were certified as Green Schools, demonstrating their dedication to environmental sustainability. The program focused on key areas such as waste management, energy conservation, water usage, sustainable food practices, and biodiversity.

The Green School program, aligned with UNESCO's Green School Quality Standard, classified schools based on their achievements. The program's impact extended beyond the classroom, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable lifestyles within families and local communities. The program is expanding to include schools from other Italian provinces, contributing to UNESCO's goal of certifying 50% of the world's schools as Green Schools by 2030.
