US Airstrikes Target Houthi Facilities in Yemen Amid Rising Tensions

On December 21, 2024, the United States Central Command reported extensive airstrikes targeting missile storage facilities and command centers of Houthi forces in Yemen. The operation resulted in the destruction of a missile storage site and a command and control center in Sana'a, utilizing F-18 fighter jets and naval vessels.

During the operation, several drones and a cruise missile launched by the Houthis over the Red Sea were also intercepted. The airstrikes aimed to disrupt Houthi operations and prevent further attacks against U.S. naval vessels and commercial ships in the southern Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden.

However, one U.S. fighter jet was reportedly shot down due to friendly fire, although both pilots were rescued with minor injuries. The U.S. military has initiated an investigation into the incident.

The airstrikes followed a Houthi missile attack on a public park in southern Tel Aviv, which injured 16 Israeli citizens, including a three-year-old girl. The Israeli government has confirmed its involvement in retaliatory strikes against Houthi positions, which have included precision attacks on military sites in Yemen.

In related developments, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak stated that Poland is prepared to intercept any Russian missiles threatening its territory. Although no Russian missiles have targeted Poland yet, the country remains vigilant and ready to act with its F-16 fighters if necessary.

Błaszczak emphasized the importance of NATO's collective defense, mentioning increased air defense measures at key locations, including Rzeszów Airport, which is under NATO protection. He noted the history of Russian drones and missiles violating the airspace of neighboring NATO countries, including Poland and Romania.
