Trump Criticizes Panama Canal Fees

On December 22, 2024, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval of the fees imposed by Panama on American vessels using the Panama Canal. In a series of posts on Truth Social, he labeled the charges as a "complete 'rip-off' of our Country," describing them as "ridiculous" and unfair.

Trump criticized the 1979 treaty signed by former President Jimmy Carter, which allowed for the transfer of control of the canal to Panama in 1999. He argued that the canal was built under President Teddy Roosevelt's administration to strengthen U.S. naval power and trade, and that it should not benefit other nations, particularly China.

He warned Panamanian officials that if they do not adhere to the principles of cooperation established during the transfer, the U.S. would demand the canal's return. The Panama Canal Authority currently charges tariffs for passage, with fees reaching as high as $300,000. The U.S. remains the largest user of the canal, followed closely by China, which has been increasing its influence in the region.
