International Film Festival of Larissa Showcases Japanese Cinema and Art

The 16th International Film Festival of Larissa kicked off with great enthusiasm on November 18, 2024, at the French Institute, featuring a visual arts exhibition titled "Blossom of the East". This exhibition showcases works by Larissa painters, inspired by Japanese art, under the curation of visual artist Michail Vakaloulis.

The exhibition includes artworks reflecting Eastern designs and colors and will run until November 20, before moving to the Hatziyanneio Cultural Center. The festival also premiered the film "With Dignity" by Dimitris Katsimiris, which addresses issues faced by the elderly, drawing a significant audience eager to engage with the director.

In an effort to attract a younger audience, the festival organizers held a grand opening concert featuring the band Strafi at the CIRCUS venue. The festival aims to foster connections between young filmmakers and audiences.

Day two of the festival, November 19, included screenings for school students and featured the award-winning animated film "The Boy and the Heron" by Hayao Miyazaki, recognized with the 2023 Golden Palm. This film, a contender for the Oscars and Golden Globe, presents a visually captivating journey of maturation against a backdrop of magical realism.

The festival's dedication to Japanese cinema is part of the 2024 initiative celebrating cultural and tourism ties between Japan and Greece. Throughout the festival, various animation films from around the world will be screened, alongside documentaries addressing climate change.

All events are free for the public, reflecting the festival's commitment to accessibility and cultural exchange.
