Saudi Arabia is making its mark at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, with the participation of Syn Architects and The Um Slaim School: An Architecture of Connection. The two entities represent the Kingdom in the prestigious event, showcasing traditional Saudi architecture and its connection to sustainability.

The Um Slaim School, a collaborative initiative of Riyadh-based Syn Architects, presents a unique approach to architecture. Founded in 2021 by Sara Alissa and Nojoud Alsudairi, the collective draws inspiration from the traditional elements of Riyadh, incorporating them into their globally recognized works.

At the Biennale, the Um Slaim School presents a collection of oral, visual, and experimental documentation that reveals the narratives of traditional Saudi culture. The project aims to foster transnational dialogue through intergenerational experiences, addressing global challenges such as climate change.

The Um Slaim School also delves into the legacy of Riyadh's distinctive architecture, exploring its connection to ecology, cultural identity, and urban development. The Saudi delegation emphasizes the importance of local wisdom in addressing contemporary challenges, particularly in Saudi Arabia, the Arab region, and beyond.

Sara Alissa, a representative of the Saudi pavilion, highlights the project's focus on storytelling and the impact of local communities on the environment and urban history. "Our interest lies in this symbiosis, how values, ideas, and wisdom shape our world, and how the parameters of our landscape influence that shaping," she stated.

Dr. Sumayah al-Solaiman, Executive Director of the Ministry of Culture's Architecture and Design Commission, expressed her appreciation for Saudi Arabia's representation at the 19th Venice Biennale. She emphasized that the Kingdom's participation aligns with Vision 2030, showcasing its commitment to contemporary architectural approaches while honoring Saudi traditions.

"We want to display our commitment to contemporary approaches in architecture while upholding Saudi traditions. By highlighting the emerging generation of designers on the international stage, we aim to inspire sustainable development both locally and globally," said Dr. al-Solaiman.
