Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has introduced Bitchat, a decentralized messaging application that enables users to communicate without internet connectivity. The app utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, allowing messages to be relayed between nearby devices, even when they are outside the standard Bluetooth range. This design aims to provide resilient communication in areas with limited or no internet access, such as during natural disasters or in regions with restricted connectivity.
Bitchat emphasizes user privacy by not requiring phone numbers, email addresses, or central servers. All messages are end-to-end encrypted and stored locally on users' devices, disappearing by default to enhance anonymity. The app also features a 'panic mode' that allows users to erase all stored data by triple-tapping the app's logo, further safeguarding user information.
Currently, Bitchat is available for iOS users through the App Store. An Android version is anticipated in the future. The app is positioned for use in disaster response, remote field coordination, large gatherings, and regions with censorship concerns, offering a secure and private alternative to traditional messaging platforms.
