Trump Plans Executive Order to Delay TikTok Ban Following Inauguration

Washington, D.C., January 16, 2025 - President-elect Donald Trump is considering an executive order to delay the enforcement of a bipartisan law requiring the Chinese ownership of TikTok to sell the platform. The proposed suspension would last for 60 to 90 days, allowing time for negotiations regarding the app's future in the U.S.

This move follows Trump's recent statements expressing support for TikTok, which he claims helped him secure votes from younger demographics.

Shou Chew, CEO of TikTok, is set to attend Trump’s inauguration and will have a prominent seat alongside other tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos.

Legal experts have raised concerns about the feasibility of Trump using an executive order to bypass a law passed with substantial bipartisan support. They argue that such orders cannot override existing legislation, and any attempt to do so may face legal challenges.

Trump's allies have positioned him as the only capable figure to negotiate a resolution that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the U.S.
