Indonesia's Digital Economy Projected to Reach $360 Billion by 2030

JAKARTA, December 23, 2024 - Indonesia's digital economy is experiencing rapid growth, with the gross merchandise value (GMV) projected to reach $90 billion this year and potentially soar to $360 billion by 2030, according to the latest Google e-Conomy SEA 2024 report. This growth is driving an increased demand for robust independent data center infrastructure.

I Made Wiryana, known as the Father of Linux in Indonesia, emphasized that data sovereignty and technology are critical pillars that can be developed through the adoption of open-source technology. He stated, “With open-source technology, we can create independent solutions tailored to local needs, supported by quality services.”

Local firm PT Equnix Business Solutions is actively supporting technological independence by providing local database solutions as alternatives to foreign software. CEO Julyanto Sutandang highlighted the importance of reducing reliance on foreign software, stating, “Indonesia has alternative solutions that are not only more affordable but also more relevant. With 11DB/Postgres™, we can maintain data sovereignty while saving the country over IDR 1 trillion.”

Equnix is also developing advanced encryption technology called Equnix Seamless Encryption (ESE), which offers end-to-end security without requiring application adjustments, designed to meet critical business data security needs.

Chief Marketing Officer Lilian Fauziah pointed out that the biggest challenge for local technology is changing user mindsets that favor foreign software. “Local technology, like what we develop, has proven effective across various sectors, from government to large private enterprises,” she said.

To promote technological independence, Equnix hosted the “Equnix Appreciation Night: Strive to Achieve IT Sovereignty” on December 19, 2024, at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, recognizing individuals and institutions contributing significantly to building an independent technology ecosystem. “We want to underline the importance of open source and independent research in reducing dependence on foreign vendors,” concluded Lilian.
