Photon Energy Unveils 250 MW Solar Hydro Project in South Africa

Date: January 14, 2025
Location: Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Photon Energy N.V. announces a 250 MW concentrated solar PV plant featuring 150 MW (1.8 GWh, 12 hours) of thermal hydro storage. This project, managed by its subsidiary Photon Renewable Energy Pty Ltd, aims to enhance energy stability in South Africa.

Key project details include:

  • Land secured: 1,200 hectares

  • Grid connection terms: Favorable for full capacity integration

  • Collaboration with Eskom: Designing solutions for regional and national grid integration

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): Expected completion by Q4 2025

  • Ready-to-build status: Anticipated by Q2 2026

The project utilizes RayGen's Solar Hydro technology, which combines concentrated solar electricity and heat generation with a water-based thermal storage solution, addressing the need for long-duration energy storage. This enables dispatchable energy for over 12 hours.

Photon Energy is pursuing Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status to expedite development and enhance collaboration with public and private stakeholders.

Photon Energy maintains a 5.44% equity stake in RayGen, reflecting its commitment to advancing innovative energy solutions.
