Costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini shared insights in a recent Netflix interview, highlighting his extensive collection of nearly 5,000 original garments spanning from the 1600s to the 1990s. Some costumes in the film are drawn from Callas's own wardrobe, offering an authentic glimpse into her life. Although 'Maria' focuses on her final days, flashbacks provide context to significant moments in her career and personal life.
Parrini noted the importance of photographs for authenticity, as they capture reality unlike idealized paintings. One standout piece in the film is a robe that represents a protective armor for Callas amidst negativity. Crafted from two types of wool for dimensionality, the robe's design was inspired by Parrini's grandmother.
