OpenAI is reportedly reevaluating its plans to develop a humanoid robot, a project it previously abandoned in 2021. The decision to pause the initiative was driven by high costs and challenges in meeting expectations, leading the company to focus on its successful ChatGPT.
However, advancements in technology and decreasing costs have prompted OpenAI to reconsider. According to sources familiar with the discussions, CEO Sam Altman has shown interest in the project, providing financial support to robotics companies such as Figure and 1X.
The potential humanoid robot would aim to integrate the advanced reasoning capabilities of ChatGPT, which has evolved to engage in nearly human-like conversations. While this remains speculative, if pursued, it may take several years before a humanoid robot from OpenAI is realized.
The shift in focus comes as Tesla's Optimus robots are already being utilized in their production lines, indicating a growing trend towards practical applications of robotics.
