Rare 350-Year-Old Clock Expected to Fetch Up to £25k at Auction

A rare 350-year-old clock, crafted by esteemed London clockmaker David Bouquet, is anticipated to fetch between £15,000 and £25,000 at an upcoming auction.

The silver clock-watch, measuring nine centimeters in diameter and housed in its original leather case, was made around 1660. It previously belonged to Sir Matthew Hale, a prominent barrister during the English Civil War who later served as Chief Justice of the King's Bench under Charles II.

This remarkable timepiece has remained in the same family since the 17th century and will be featured in a sale at Wotton Auction Rooms on Tuesday, November 5.

Auctioneer Joseph Trinder expressed excitement over the piece, stating, “It’s an incredibly early little timepiece, made around 1660-1665 in London. I think it’s going to be rather hotly chased.” He emphasized the clock’s historical significance and craftsmanship, noting, “Pieces like this perfectly summarise why I love what I do for a living.”

The clock's solid silver case is intricately engraved with a pair of hounds chasing a stag, while the outer leather case boasts a red velvet lining and brass fittings. The mechanism is signed 'D Bouquet London' and even includes an alarm feature.

Trinder highlighted that such well-preserved pieces are rare, particularly those with impeccable provenance. The auction house is eager to see where this extraordinary timepiece's story will lead after the sale.
