On July 17, 2025, Slovenia became the first European Union country to declare two Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, persona non grata. This decision was announced by Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, who cited the ministers' alleged "genocidal statements," support for illegal West Bank settlements, and incitement of violence against Palestinians. The move follows a lack of consensus among EU foreign ministers on joint action against Israel for human rights violations. Fajon emphasized that Slovenia's decision marks a significant precedent within the EU and indicated that further measures are under consideration. Both ministers are known supporters of West Bank settlements and have drawn international criticism. Last year, Slovenia recognized an independent Palestinian state. In June, several nations including Britain, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada imposed sanctions on the same Israeli ministers for similar reasons. The action comes amid Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, launched in response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and saw 251 hostages taken. According to Gaza health authorities, Israel’s response has resulted in over 58,000 Palestinian deaths.
