ESA and Viasat Collaborate on Direct-to-Device Satellite System for Global Connectivity

18:04, 28 Januari

On January 27, 2025, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Viasat formalized a partnership in Brussels to explore a Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite system aimed at providing mobile broadband connectivity globally.

Viasat's initiative focuses on developing a satellite constellation that will enable direct connections to consumer smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, eliminating the need for traditional cell towers or ground infrastructure. This system promises uninterrupted coverage for users, regardless of their location.

This agreement builds upon the existing collaborative efforts between ESA and Viasat, which have previously yielded significant advancements in air traffic communication and optical data transmission technologies. Notable projects include Iris, which enhances safety and efficiency in air travel, and AIDAN Next, aimed at improving data transmission security.

The D2D initiative aligns with ESA's goals for collaborative operations within the European and Canadian space sectors, emphasizing the importance of interoperability among multiple satellite operators.

Josef Aschbacher, ESA's Director General, stated, "By developing Direct-to-Device technologies, we are positioning Europe to capitalize and gain share in a highly competitive market. This partnership with Viasat paves the way for our Member States to access autonomous, seamless, and resilient connectivity solutions, enhancing our technological competitiveness on the global stage."
