ESA and Avio Partner to Advance Vega Rocket System and Launch FORUM Mission

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed contracts with Avio to enhance the Vega rocket system, focusing on three primary areas: upgrading ground systems for increased launch frequency, developing the Vega-E system, and launching the FORUM Earth observation mission using the Vega-C rocket.

Key upgrades will transform the former Ariane 5 integration building at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, allowing simultaneous assembly of two rockets. This advancement will facilitate parallel launch campaigns, significantly reducing turnaround times and increasing flexibility in the Vega-E development process.

The agreement encompasses vital components, including rocket stages and logistics for fueling, as well as comprehensive testing of the Vega-E system. The FORUM mission, scheduled for launch in 2024, highlights the Vega rocket family's capabilities in Earth observation, following the successful deployment of Copernicus Sentinel satellites.

This contract marks the beginning of a new procurement framework between ESA and Avio for launch services, reinforcing the importance of the Vega rocket family in European space transportation.
