Apple's 5G Modem Plans Unveiled

Apple is set to transition all devices to its own 5G modems by 2027, aiming to enhance connectivity across more product lines, including the MacBook and Vision Pro.

Currently, Apple utilizes modems exclusively in iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, requiring other devices to connect to the internet via routers or smartphones.

According to internal reports, Apple is preparing Mac models with 5G chips, although these are not expected until 2026. The Vision Pro headset may also feature mobile support in the future.

The rollout of Apple's proprietary 5G modems is planned to begin next year, replacing Qualcomm's technology. The initial generation, named 'Sinope', will debut in the iPhone SE 2025 and select iPads, with full integration expected by 2026.

Apple's goal is to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, lower production costs, and improve energy efficiency through tighter integration with system-on-chips (SoCs). The new modems aim for lower Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values and enable slimmer device designs, such as the upcoming iPhone 'Air', projected to be around 6.25 mm thick.

Manufacturing will take place at TSMC, while development occurs in Munich and Cupertino. Apple has been working on its modems since 2018 and recently extended its licensing agreement with Qualcomm through 2026, as the project has evolved into a significant endeavor for the company.
