BEIJING: The Zhengyang Gate arrow tower, a significant heritage site along Beijing's Central Axis, reopened to the public on December 26, 2024, after being closed for over 30 years. This reopening follows the Central Axis's recent inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July.

Originally built in 1439 during the Ming Dynasty, the arrow tower is a key element of Beijing's historic city wall system. The structure has undergone several restorations, with the latest beginning in 2020, focusing on preserving its historical integrity through the use of original materials and craftsmanship.

The restoration included work on the terrace, sculptures, window trim, and roofing, ensuring the site is accessible to visitors. The reopened areas feature exhibition halls across four floors, with the first three floors dedicated to a special exhibition titled 'Beijing Central Axis: A Building Masterpiece?' that explores the site's cultural value and preservation.

During the initial trial phase, which lasts six months, admission to the tower is free, with visitors required to make real-name reservations online. Daily attendance is capped at 800 to maintain the safety of the historic structure, which features narrow steps that require careful navigation.

The fourth floor serves as a cultural lounge, offering activities such as tea ceremonies and displays of antique furniture, further enriching the visitor experience. The reopening is aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation of the tower's architectural features and its significance in Beijing's cultural heritage.
