New Book Highlights Importance of Pollinators for Global Agriculture

A new publication titled "Plantas que os polinizadores gostam" has been released by Embrapa, emphasizing the critical role of pollinators in global agriculture and ecosystem services.

Spanning over 1,000 pages, the book provides practical information aimed at protecting pollinators and their essential ecosystem service of pollination. It includes a comprehensive list of more than 2,000 bee species found in Brazil and around 200 plant species favored by these pollinators.

Pollination is crucial for the reproduction of approximately 80% of flowering plants. An estimated 1,200 cultivated plant species, vital for food and other products, rely on pollinators. Without these services, agricultural productivity would decline, leading to higher costs and reduced quality for consumers.

The financial value of pollination globally exceeds $600 billion annually. In Brazil, studies have shown that a significant number of crops are dependent on pollinators, with a contribution rate of up to 30% for those reliant on this essential service.

This book not only serves farmers but also urban planners and government officials, providing guidance on creating environments that support pollinators. By integrating agricultural practices with environmental sustainability, Brazil aims to enhance its agricultural market presence globally.

Through the insights offered in this publication, Brazil can further demonstrate its commitment to sustainable agriculture, benefiting both the economy and biodiversity.
