The Central America Tourism Promotion Agency (Cata) is actively promoting the region as a vibrant travel destination, comprising Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. This collective effort showcases Central America as an emerging alternative for European travelers.
At the recent Fitur International Tourism Fair in Madrid, Cata highlighted four key attractions: the Caribbean, the Pacific, nature tourism, and the rich cultural tapestry of the Mayan world along with the ethnic diversity of the Caribbean coast. According to Boris Iraheta, the Secretary General of Cata, travelers to this region seek a blend of culture, adventure, and natural beauty.
The United States remains the primary source of visitors, with Europe following closely behind, particularly Spain, which sent over 476,000 travelers to the region last year. Despite the uncertainties surrounding global politics, Iraheta believes that Central America could benefit as markets like North America and Asia may once again view Latin America as a prime travel destination.
However, challenges such as safety perceptions persist. Cata is actively working to change these narratives through campaigns like 'Central America, Safe Without a Doubt,' which emphasizes the region's rich historical and cultural heritage over its security concerns.
