In light of World Mental Health Day (October 10), experts in Dubai have highlighted the psychological toll of traffic congestion. Regularly getting stuck in traffic can lead to issues such as anxiety and depression, according to medical specialists.
Dr. Habib Abdullah, a pediatric clinical psychologist practicing at Mubadala Health in Dubai, noted that spending long hours in traffic significantly impacts both mental and physical health. He explained that the unpredictability of travel time can create irritation and mood swings, leading to feelings of helplessness and impulsivity.
Moreover, the time spent in traffic can exacerbate sleep deprivation. Dr. Abdullah mentioned that motorists who leave home early to avoid peak traffic may sacrifice their sleep, extending their total daily commitment from eight to fourteen hours, which cuts into valuable family time.
Physical health is also at risk due to long commutes. Dr. Saheer Sainalabdeen, a pulmonologist at Medeor Hospital, explained that poor air quality from vehicle emissions can lead to respiratory ailments and cardiovascular issues. Vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, are particularly affected.
To mitigate these challenges, medical experts suggest several solutions: flexible working hours, public transportation, carpooling, and utilizing traffic update apps. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper sleep, diet, and exercise is crucial.
