Brighton is set to celebrate Dia de los Muertos on November 2, a vibrant holiday honoring departed loved ones with rich cultural significance. This event, organized by St. Paul's Episcopal Church in collaboration with El Árbol Taquería and the Brighton Area Historical Society, will take place from 2 to 7 p.m.
Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, has its roots in ancient indigenous traditions from central Mexico, where it is celebrated as a time to remember and celebrate those who have passed away. In Brighton, festivities will include face painting, crafts, a photo booth, and the creation of memorial altars. Attendees can enjoy food and live music performed by Mariachi Cristal from 5 to 7 p.m.
Additionally, guided tours of the Old Village Cemetery will occur at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., while St. Paul's Historic Chapel will be open for candle lighting and personal prayer in remembrance of lost loved ones. Rev. Jeanne Hansknecht expresses the universal nature of this remembrance, stating, "Regardless of our cultural background or faith tradition, remembering those we have loved and lost is a universal part of the human experience." In case of inclement weather, activities will be relocated indoors.
