UK's Battery Storage Push Gains Momentum

Edited by: S Света

The UK is witnessing increasing support for renewable energy projects incorporating battery storage, crucial for stabilizing the grid and achieving decarbonization goals. The trend is highlighted by recent polling data and government initiatives.

The UK government's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, unveiled in December 2024, targets a significant increase in battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity. The plan aims for a fivefold increase, reaching 23 to 27 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, up from 4.5 GW in 2023.

The public and local councillors overwhelmingly support battery storage projects, especially on brownfield land. This aligns with government efforts to remove barriers to long-term energy storage deployment. The UK is committed to achieving clean energy generation to meet total annual electricity demand by 2030.
