Colombia peace talks: vatican proposed as new venue for eln negotiations

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed the Vatican City as the new venue for peace negotiations with the ELN guerrilla group. This follows a meeting with Pope Leo XIV, where discussions focused on peace processes and challenges like security and climate change.

The proposal comes after peace talks with the ELN were suspended in January 2025. Petro suggested the Vatican as a potential site to foster an environment of peace and goodwill.

The Colombian government is evaluating resuming negotiations. The choice of the Vatican could significantly influence the talks, potentially leading to a more constructive dialogue and a positive impact on Colombia's stability.
