Edited by: gaya ❤️ one

Bulgaria is on track to adopt the euro as its official currency on January 1, 2026, following comprehensive preparations and final approvals from European institutions. The country's commitment to this significant economic transition has been underscored by recent legislative amendments and the establishment of robust consumer protection measures.

The Council for the Coordination of the Preparation of the Republic of Bulgaria for Euro Area Membership has been central to orchestrating the practical steps for integration into the Eurozone. Amendments to the Law on the Introduction of the Euro, proposed in July 2025, aim to prevent unjustified price increases by introducing stricter penalties and expanding the oversight capabilities of the Commission for Consumer Protection. These measures involve analyzing critical economic sectors to curb speculative pricing, with over 150 retail outlets currently under heightened scrutiny and increased inspections.

Public awareness campaigns are being conducted across 165 municipal centers, targeting traders, business representatives, and local authorities to foster trust and open dialogue about the currency change. Bulgaria's long-standing commitment to euro adoption is evidenced by the lev being pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN since 1999. The country officially joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) on July 10, 2020. In June 2025, the European Commission and the European Central Bank confirmed Bulgaria's fulfillment of the necessary convergence criteria, paving the way for its official entry.

Legislative frameworks have been strengthened, with amendments extending the period of dual price indication and circulation to offer extended consumer protection against misleading pricing practices. Clearer rules regarding the font and color of dual price displays are also being introduced. The government is increasing the severity of sanctions for non-compliant traders, reinforcing its dedication to a transparent and equitable euro adoption process. This comprehensive approach ensures that citizens are well-informed and protected throughout this significant economic evolution, demonstrating Bulgaria's clear vision for a stable and prosperous future within the Eurozone.
