Brazil is set to introduce the Ukrainian language and literature into its educational curriculum beginning in 2026. This initiative, announced by Vitorio Sorotiuk, president of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation (UBCC), aims to deepen cultural understanding and preserve the Ukrainian heritage within Brazil.
A key component of this plan is the launch of a Portuguese-Ukrainian course at the Federal University of Central Brazil (Unicentro) in Paraná state. This program is intended to facilitate learning and strengthen cultural ties between Ukraine and Brazil. Sorotiuk emphasized the need for updated teaching materials to support Ukrainian language instruction across Brazilian institutions, highlighting its importance for maintaining Ukrainian culture among the Brazilian population.
Olena Ivanivska, an advocate for the Ukrainian language, praised Brazil's efforts in promoting and popularizing the language. She noted the significant role of the Ukrainian diaspora in preserving national identity and cultural traditions. Brazil is home to one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas globally, with approximately 600,000 individuals of Ukrainian descent residing in the country as of 2021. The state of Paraná, particularly the municipality of Prudentópolis, is a major center for this community, with about 75% of its population tracing their ancestry to Ukraine.
In recognition of this deep-rooted presence, Prudentópolis officially recognized Ukrainian as a co-official language in 2021. Further cultural exchange will be facilitated by a dedicated stand showcasing Ukrainian culture at the Art Museum of Brazil in 2025 during the European Culture Festival, offering visitors an immersive experience into Ukrainian history and traditions. These initiatives underscore Brazil's commitment to integrating and celebrating Ukrainian culture within its diverse society.
