On March 12, 2025, the United Nations launched the UN80 Initiative to address global challenges and reform the multilateral system. This initiative, announced on the 80th anniversary of the UN, aims to improve the organization's effectiveness in addressing conflict, poverty, and other pressing issues.
The UN80 Initiative will involve a comprehensive assessment by a dedicated task force, led by the Under-Secretary-General for Policy. The task force will present proposals to Member States in three areas: efficiencies and improvements within current arrangements; the implementation of all mandates received from Member States; and the need for structural changes and programme realignment within the United Nations system.
The initiative seeks to ensure a more effective, cost-efficient, networked, and inclusive multilateralism to reduce human suffering and build better futures. It aligns with the 2030 Agenda and the Pact for the Future, emphasizing the need for urgent global responses to current challenges. The Secretary-General will consult with Member States on progress and proposals.
The UN80 Initiative is expected to drive significant reforms within the UN system, ensuring it is better equipped to address 21st-century challenges and promote peace, sustainable development, humanitarian action, and human rights globally.
