Second Anniversary of October 7 Attacks: UN Chief Urges Peace, Trump Proposes Gaza Solution
Edited by: Svetlana Velgush
As the world marks the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Guterres emphasized the critical need for a credible political process to prevent further loss of life and foster lasting peace, reiterating the UN's commitment to supporting security, dignity, and mutual respect for all peoples in the region.
In parallel, former U.S. President Donald Trump has put forward a comprehensive peace proposal for Gaza. His initiative includes establishing a demilitarized zone within Gaza, dismantling military and terrorist infrastructure, promoting reconstruction and economic development for Gaza's residents, alongside robust border security measures, temporary external management of the Gaza Strip, and the deployment of international stabilization forces. Israel has expressed agreement with Washington's proposal. The international community has responded with a mix of interest and cautious optimism, with some leaders supporting it as a potential pathway to peace, while others question its practical implementation and adherence to international legal frameworks.
Hamas has indicated a willingness to accept parts of Trump's plan, including the release of hostages and a handover of power to an independent Palestinian technocratic body, though it does not contain a direct mention of disarmament. Further consultations are deemed necessary. The conflict, which began with the October 7, 2023 attacks, has resulted in 1,152 deaths among Israeli security forces and around 250 hostages taken.
Diplomatic efforts by mediators such as Egypt and Qatar continue, with hopes that initiatives like Trump's proposal can contribute to a more stable and peaceful future for the region. The international community's engagement underscores a shared aspiration for an end to the suffering and the establishment of lasting peace and security for all.
