Mexico: Strained Relations With Canada During Trump's Trade War, Now Reassessed

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico's Secretary of Economy, acknowledged strained relations with Canada under Justin Trudeau during Donald Trump's trade war. Tensions arose from tariff pressures and renegotiation of the USMCA trade agreement. Trudeau's remarks about border differences further strained the relationship. Ebrard stated that relations are being reassessed with the new Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney. He emphasized the importance of Canada as a partner in trilateral discussions. Ebrard highlighted Mexico's focus on deepening economic ties with the United States. Ebrard noted that nearly 90% of Mexican exports to the US are now tariff-free. Efforts are underway to secure better trade terms for the steel industry. Eight meetings have been held to reduce tariffs on steel within North America.
