Germany is deepening its military cooperation with Ukraine, committing to co-develop weapons systems and finance critical battlefield infrastructure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a €5 billion military aid package, which includes German financing for the production of long-range weapons within Ukraine. These systems are already in service with Ukrainian forces and can be deployed within weeks.
The agreement signals a new phase of military-industrial cooperation between the two countries. Merz emphasized that there would be no restrictions on the range of these weapons. This move follows Merz's earlier statement lifting range restrictions on all Western-supplied weapons to Ukraine.
This package also covers new contracts for air defense systems, munitions, and logistical support, including maintenance infrastructure and satellite communications. Germany will also finance a significant portion of Starlink satellite coverage in Ukraine, helping secure communications as Kyiv prepares for potential increased Russian assaults.
