Trump Appoints Jeanine Pirro as Interim Washington Prosecutor, Faces Immigration Setback

Donald Trump announced Jeanine Pirro as the interim prosecutor for Washington on Truth Social. He praised her past experience as a prosecutor, judge, and her career on Fox News. Trump also announced Ed Martin as the new director of the Task Force on the Instrumentalization of Justice. However, Martin's confirmation faced setbacks due to revelations about his ties to participants in the January 6th Capitol attack. These ties included a connection to a self-proclaimed Nazi sympathizer and frequent appearances on Russian media. Trump's administration has asked the Supreme Court to allow the revocation of legal status for 532,000 immigrants. These immigrants are from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Haiti. A federal judge previously suspended the administration's cancellation of a program allowing these nationals to reside in the US for two years. The program was established under Joe Biden, Trump's Democratic predecessor. The judge ruled that the Trump administration misinterpreted the law by applying an expedited expulsion procedure. This procedure targeted foreigners who entered the country illegally, but not those legally present under government programs. The Trump administration accuses the federal judge of overstepping executive power in immigration management. Trump has made combating illegal immigration a top priority. His program of mass expulsions has faced multiple legal challenges.
