Senate Overrides Trump's Canada Tariffs with Bipartisan Vote

Edited by: S Света

On Wednesday, the Senate passed a resolution repealing President Trump's tariffs on Canada by a vote of 51-48. The resolution, led by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), aimed to rescind the emergency declaration the White House issued in February, citing fentanyl distribution as justification for the tariffs.

Republican Senators Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul voted with the Democrats. Earlier that day, Trump criticized these senators on Truth Social, questioning their motives and accusing them of "Trump Derangement Syndrome."

Collins stated on Monday that imposing tariffs on Canada would be a "huge mistake." McConnell added that it would be best to work with allies to protect against China's practices.

The Senate vote occurred shortly after Trump announced new tariffs on major trading partners, including the European Union and China. He stated the US would charge these nations approximately half of what they charge the US.
