On June 19, 2025, U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff held several phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. These talks aimed to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
The discussions marked the most substantial direct communication between the two nations since Israeli attacks began on June 13, 2025. These attacks targeted Iranian objectives, prompting a retaliatory missile and drone strike by Iran against Israel.
According to diplomats who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, Araghchi stated that Tehran would not return to negotiations unless Israel ceased the attacks that began on June 13. They said the talks included a brief discussion of a U.S. proposal, conveyed to Iran in late May, aimed at establishing a regional consortium for uranium enrichment outside of Iran. Tehran has so far rejected the proposal.
The international community expressed concerns over the escalating conflict. Russia warned that U.S. military intervention could destabilize the region, potentially leading to a nuclear catastrophe. Iran has since reinforced defenses around its key nuclear and missile sites.
President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of military action against Iran, indicating a decision could be made within a week. Despite diplomatic efforts and defensive measures, tensions remain high, with the risk of further escalation and significant impacts on regional and global stability.
