EU-China Summit Addresses Trade Imbalances and Climate Cooperation

17:27, 25 July

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The 25th EU-China Summit took place in Beijing on July 24, 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the European Union and China. The summit focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges, particularly in trade and climate change.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to discuss various issues affecting the EU-China relationship. A central topic was the significant trade imbalance, with the EU's trade deficit with China reaching €305 billion in 2024. The EU expressed concerns over systemic distortions and manufacturing overcapacity, urging for a more balanced and mutually beneficial economic relationship. Both parties agreed to engage in constructive dialogue to find negotiated solutions and emphasized the importance of open cooperation and proper handling of differences. They also opposed decoupling and the severing of industrial and supply chains, advocating for the maintenance of open markets and cooperation.

On climate change, the EU and China reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement and agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as energy transition, adaptation, methane emissions management, carbon markets, and green and low-carbon technologies. Both sides recognized the importance of multilateralism and the need to address climate change collectively. They agreed to work together to lead global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including at the upcoming COP30 conference.

Regarding geopolitical issues, the EU raised concerns about China's stance on Russia's war in Ukraine, urging China to use its influence to support a just and lasting peace. The EU also expressed concerns about China's support for Russia and its impact on global security. Both sides agreed to enhance understanding and trust through dialogue and properly handle relevant issues.

Overall, the summit aimed to deepen the EU-China partnership, address mutual concerns, and collaborate on global challenges, with a particular focus on achieving a balanced economic relationship and effective climate action.
