European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has voiced strong support for North Macedonia's EU integration. She praised the country's progress during a three-day visit to Western Balkan hopefuls. Kallas emphasized the EU's commitment to North Macedonia's membership.

Speaking in Skopje, Kallas highlighted North Macedonia's economic growth and reforms. She also noted its alignment with EU foreign and security policies. "North Macedonia belongs to the European Union," she stated.

Brussels has revived accession talks with countries in Europe's southeast. This comes after Russia's invasion of Ukraine raised concerns about regional instability. Kallas warned that non-integration of the Western Balkans poses a security risk.

North Macedonia has faced challenges in its EU membership bid. These include vetoes over disputes with Greece and Bulgaria. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski noted the burden of bilateral issues on their path to EU membership.

Mickoski highlighted that these issues are often tied to identity and historical events. He expressed frustration over being stuck on bilateral disputes instead of focusing on the future. Albania and Montenegro have recently emerged as frontrunners for EU membership.

The EU's support aims to reduce tensions and promote stability in the region. Full integration of the Western Balkans is seen as crucial for regional security. The focus remains on encouraging continued reforms and progress towards EU membership for North Macedonia.
