Germany Warns Russia of New Sanctions if Ukraine Talks Fail

21:48, 13 May

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Berlin - Germany has warned Russia of potential new sanctions if peace talks regarding Ukraine stall. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, indicated possible measures targeting the energy sector and financial markets.

Merz praised Ukrainian President Zelensky's commitment to negotiations. He highlighted Zelensky's courage and willingness to compromise despite difficult circumstances. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged Russia to engage in peace talks scheduled for Thursday in Istanbul.

Wadephul emphasized that Russia must participate if it is serious about peace. He warned of further action if Russia rejects Zelensky's offer for talks. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested further sanctions and increased support for Ukraine if Russia continues its current course.

The EU has already approved 16 sanction packages against Russia. These include restrictions on key sectors like aluminum, oil, and banking. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that ultimatums and sanctions are unacceptable when dealing with Russia.

Peskov noted Russia is preparing for the scheduled talks. Zelensky has called for stronger sanctions if Putin refuses to meet in Turkey. Zelensky's advisor Mykhailo Podolyak reported that US envoys will travel to Istanbul.

Zelensky insists on a prior ceasefire. Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, stated Putin's refusal to attend would signal Russia's unwillingness to end the war.
