The UK's Crown Estate has granted seabed leases to Equinor and Gwynt Glas for the development of floating offshore wind farms in the Celtic Sea. The projects, each with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW), are located off the coasts of Wales and South West England.
Gwynt Glas is a joint venture between EDF Renewables UK and ESB. The initiative is part of the UK's plan to increase offshore wind capacity to 43-50 GW by 2030, supporting the decarbonization of its electricity sector.
The projects will undergo a consenting process and could be operational in the early 2030s. Floating wind technology allows access to stronger wind sources and is expected to create jobs in areas like Port Talbot and Bristol.
