South Korean Engineers Develop Advanced Haptic Technology for Safer Robot Control

Engineers in South Korea have developed new haptic technology. The technology aims to enhance the safety and ease of controlling robots in hazardous industrial settings. This innovation could significantly reduce risks in environments like factories and steel mills.

The team, led by Professor Keehoon Kim, created touch-based devices. These devices allow for more precise robot control, even remotely. The haptic tools enable users to "feel" the robot's actions through their hands.

The devices, POstick-KF and POstick-VF, offer different feedback types. POstick-KF provides kinesthetic feedback, conveying the force applied by the robot. POstick-VF combines visual cues with tactile sensations for a more immersive experience.

Testing showed improved precision and fewer accidents with the new devices. The POstick-VF also proved effective as a training tool. The technology incorporates digital twins and augmented reality for enhanced user experience.

Professor Kim hopes this invention will improve safety and reduce workload. This new human-robot teamwork could make complex and dangerous jobs safer and easier. The technology promises a safer and more efficient future for industrial work.
