Meta to Cease Political Advertising in EU Amid New Regulations

17:29, 25 July

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Meta Platforms has announced it will halt political, electoral, and social issue advertising on its platforms in the European Union starting in early October 2025. This decision responds to the EU's Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation, which introduces significant operational challenges and legal uncertainties for advertisers and platforms operating in the EU.

The TTPA, effective from October 10, 2025, requires digital platforms to clearly label political ads and provide detailed information about sponsors, costs, and the specific electoral processes or referendums they relate to. Meta expressed concerns that these obligations create an untenable level of complexity and legal uncertainty, potentially limiting personalized and informative campaign content.

Despite the advertising ban, Meta clarified that users and political candidates in the EU will still be able to share and discuss political content organically on its platforms. This move reflects a broader trend of major tech companies reassessing their advertising strategies in response to increasing regulatory pressures aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in digital political advertising.
