A recent study suggests that a small tax on airline tickets could generate over 100 billion euros annually, contributing to the financing of efforts to combat the climate crisis. Aviation is a major source of carbon emissions, but it is often inexpensive due to exemptions from fuel taxes and a lack of payments for environmental impacts. According to data, aviation accounts for more than 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Various countries are considering implementing similar taxes. For example, France has increased the solidarity tax on airline tickets, making it between 7.40 and 40 euros per passenger in economy class, depending on the destination. This tax aims to raise funds to support climate efforts.
At the international level, during the COP29 Climate Conference in Azerbaijan, leaders discussed the possibility of imposing global solidarity taxes, including taxes on aviation and maritime transport, to raise funds to help developing countries cope with the impacts of climate change.
