In response to worsening climate events and a surge in environmental crimes, Brazil's Federal Police (PF) has increased operations in the Amazon region during 2025.
These actions aim to enhance the PF's response capabilities and ensure criminal accountability for individuals involved in illegal activities affecting the environment. The operations include the deployment of military personnel and specialized units.
The PF is collaborating with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) in joint actions to combat environmental crimes in federal conservation units. These efforts are in response to a significant increase in deforestation.
Deforestation in May 2025 reached 960 km², a 92% increase compared to May 2024. This rise is linked to climate change and previous fires, which weaken vegetation and facilitate deforestation.
These joint operations between the PF, IBAMA, ICMBio, and the Armed Forces demonstrate a coordinated effort to address environmental challenges in the Amazon, aiming to protect biodiversity and promote sustainability in the region.
