Africa has initiated the Great Green Wall project, a major effort to combat desertification across the continent. The initiative aims to restore 100 million hectares of land, sequester 250 million tons of carbon, and generate 10 million jobs by 2030. The project seeks to restore degraded lands across an 8,000-kilometer stretch spanning 20 countries from Senegal to Djibouti. It intends to transform arid land into productive ecosystems, capture carbon, and create employment for local communities. While facing challenges and criticisms regarding its approach, the Great Green Wall has successfully converted arid areas into cultivable land in several regions, employing innovative techniques for water conservation and soil protection.
