Bahrain Inaugurates Major Upgrade to BAPCO Refinery Amid National Celebrations

22:02, 25 December

On December 25, 2024, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain inaugurated the largest upgrade in the history of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) refinery. This project aligns with the kingdom's strategic vision for sustainable development and aims to enhance Bahrain's position in the oil and energy sectors.

The inauguration coincides with Bahrain's national celebrations, including the 25th anniversary of the King's accession, and serves as a reminder of the original BAPCO refinery's opening on December 11, 1937, highlighting the continuous evolution of the energy sector in Bahrain.

King Hamad's use of a traditional dagger to cut the ribbon symbolizes a connection between the past and present, reflecting the leadership's commitment to sustainability and development within the energy sector.

The BAPCO project is significant economically, as Bahrain was the first country in the region to discover oil in 1932. The upgrade is expected to increase refining capacity by 42%, reaching 400,000 barrels per day, while minimizing reliance on locally produced natural gas by incorporating solar and wind energy technologies.

This initiative also aims to create job opportunities, with plans to employ 90% Bahrainis over the next five years, thereby supporting the local economy and enhancing the workforce.

The BAPCO refinery upgrade represents a strategic investment that will strengthen Bahrain's role as a regional energy hub, attracting foreign investments and contributing to national revenues. It embodies Bahrain's commitment to sustainable development and innovation, ensuring a balance between heritage and progress.
