Surgeons in Surgut, Russia, Adopt Innovative Ultrasound Technique for Treating Pulmonary Embolism

On December 3, 2024, medical professionals in Surgut, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, announced the successful implementation of a new ultrasound technique for treating pulmonary embolism. This method, learned during training in Moscow, enables doctors to effectively restore blood flow in patients by using ultrasound to dissolve blood clots.

The procedure involves minimal invasiveness, with operations performed through small incisions in the femoral veins. Infusion catheters with ultrasound cores are inserted directly into the clots in the pulmonary arteries. Simultaneously, thrombolytic medication is administered while ultrasound waves are applied, leading to the dissolution of clots within hours.

Pavel Kan, head of the department of interventional radiology, noted that pulmonary embolism is one of the most common and dangerous cardiovascular conditions. The adoption of this technology allows for the treatment of patients with complex cases, significantly reducing the need for extensive medication and minimizing the risk of side effects.
