NSW RFS Tests Electric Truck for Future Emergency Services Integration

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has conducted an extended test drive of the Volvo FM Electric, exploring the potential for low-emission vehicles in emergency services. The test took place on October 10, 2024, covering a 550-kilometer route from Glendenning to Albury, Australia, where the vehicle was showcased at the NSW RFS Championships.

The driving team, which included Inspector Brendan Doyle and other RFS officials, assessed the truck's performance and heavy vehicle charging experience. The vehicle averaged 88.7 km/h with an energy consumption of 1.24 kWh/km, requiring 120 minutes of charging during the 6.2-hour journey.

Cameron Bettany, Vice President of Governmental Sales at Volvo Group Australia, noted the growing interest in electric trucks from fire and emergency services across the country. He emphasized the importance of reducing emissions for both climate change and the health of first responders. The integration of battery electric trucks is seen as crucial for sustainable operations in the face of climate challenges.
