Athens, June 17, 2025 — Greece has protested Turkey's maritime spatial plan, which claims territories in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Athens considers these claims illegal.
Turkey presented a map prepared by Ankara University for consideration by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO in early June 2025. This map reflects Turkish positions on maritime zones that diverge from Greek and international norms.
In April 2025, Greece published its own maritime spatial plan covering the same regions and deemed the Turkish map legally unfounded.
The dispute exacerbates long-standing disagreements between the two NATO allies, but the parties are continuing dialogue and plan a high-level meeting this year.
