Brussels, May 22: The European Parliament approved higher tariffs on agricultural goods from Russia and Belarus on Thursday, May 22. These tariffs will apply to products previously exempt from EU duties. The new law aims to impose tariffs on agricultural imports from Russia.

The approved measures include a 6.5% tariff on imports from Russia and Belarus. Additional levies of 40-45 euros per ton will be introduced between 2025 and 2026. By 2028, these levies will increase to 430 euros per ton.

The European Commission proposed this measure in late January. The European Parliament supported the proposal with 411 votes in favor, 78 abstentions, and 100 against. The Council of the EU is now expected to vote on it.
