New York, May 13 - UN Secretary-General António Guterres is continuing to implement extensive reforms to the UN system, building upon the UN80 initiative launched in March 2025. These reforms aim to enhance the UN's effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and responsiveness.
The UN80 Initiative, which builds on the Pact for the Future and UN 2.0, focuses on streamlining operations, reviewing mandate implementation, and exploring structural reforms. A dedicated internal Task Force, led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder, is developing proposals to improve efficiency and cut costs.
Proposed changes include consolidating functions, streamlining the workforce, and centralizing IT and support services. Guterres emphasized the importance of these reforms for better serving people and ensuring the responsible use of public funds. The UN80 initiative is designed around identifying efficiencies, reviewing mandates, and considering structural changes to make the UN more effective and nimble.
