Annalena Baerbock Nominated as German Candidate for UN General Assembly President 2025/26

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is nominated as Germany's candidate for President of the UN General Assembly for the 2025/26 session. The German government initiated a cabinet decision to this effect. Baerbock is expected to be elected by the UN General Assembly in early June and assume office in September for a one-year term. Her election is considered a formality within the UN. Upon assuming the presidency, Baerbock will resign from her Bundestag mandate. As President, Baerbock will organize and chair the UN General Assembly sessions. Before the election, she plans to present her work program in New York in May. Russia has expressed opposition to Baerbock's candidacy. Germany's candidacy underscores its commitment to the UN. A strong German presence in this role is seen as vital for Germany's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2027/28.
