UK Parliament Approves Assisted Dying Bill

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On June 20, 2025, the UK Parliament's House of Commons approved the "Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill," also known as the Assisted Dying Bill. The vote was 314 to 291.

The legislation will allow adults with terminal illnesses and a life expectancy of less than six months to request medical assistance to die, provided they meet specific criteria. These include residency, mental capacity, and independent declarations of their wish to die, as well as approval from two independent doctors.

The bill, proposed by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, now moves to the House of Lords. If approved, the law is expected to take effect within four years. The vote reflects a growing acceptance of assisted dying in cases of terminal illness, though debate continues regarding the protection of vulnerable individuals.
