Trump Imposes Tariffs on Japan and South Korea

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On July 7, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on all imported goods from Japan and South Korea. The tariffs are set to take effect on August 1, 2025.

Trump stated that the measure aims to address what he views as an unequal trade relationship and a persistent trade deficit with these nations. He sent letters to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, arguing that the tariffs are necessary.

Trump warned that if Japan and South Korea retaliate with similar tariffs on U.S. products, the levies could increase by an additional 25%. This decision is part of Trump's broader strategy to revise and correct the United States' international trade relations.
